Dr. Nkumbe, MICEI Chief Executive Officer and Chief of the Retina Department, he is a vitreoretinal surgeon and a public health ophthalmologist. Dr. Nkumbe joined the MICEI design and implementation team in June 2010 during the ICO’s World Ophthalmology Congress in Berlin, Germany. He attended Medical School in Goettingen, Germany, and Lausanne, Switzerland, followed by ophthalmology residency in Nairobi, Kenya, and a surgical retina fellowship at Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, India as a Hel merich Scholar.
Following a two-year stint with the World Health Organization’s TDR. in Geneva, he wor ked with CBM in Tanzania and Madagascar for seven years, helping with the implementation of VISION 2020 programs. In recognition of his work, Dr. Nkumbe was honoured with the Knight of the Madagascar Order of Merit by the President of Madagascar. Dr. Nkumbe has also served on several advisory boards, including technical advisor for the Lions Clubs Sight First Program in charge of francophone Africa and West Africa. He was also a visiting lecturer on the Community Eye Health Course at Groote Schur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Dr. Nkumbe was a visiting Professor at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute in 2013. He is the Founding President of CAMFOMEDICS, the 30-year-old Germano-Cameroonian Forum for the Medical Sciences, and he is the Founding General Secretary of the African Ophthalmolo gy Forum, now African Ophthalmology Council. He has received several awards in recogni tion of his work in fighting visual impairment.
